Travels/I still Exist!

I had to plan what I'm going to teach to the kids in India today.

Let me backtrack, I've had like 6 months to do this, but it was due today so naturally I waited.

I wanted to share what I'm going to teach with y'all, maybe get some feedback. Really I'm just excited cause I think I made a kick a plan. :)

Here it is . . .

Book: Running Shoes by Frederick Lipp
Themes: persistence, giving, learning, acceptance
This is a story of a young girl, Sophy, in a village that is visited by the “numbers” man. One month during his visit he notices Sophy looking at his running shoes and takes some measurements of her feet. About a month later Sophy was sent a pair of her own shoes, she is ecstatic because this means she can complete her goal. We then see that her goal was to go to school, but because she lived 8km away and the path was covered in rocks she was never able to go. She gets to school and all the boys make fun of her because she is a girl. Sophy challenges the boys to a race and wins, after this the boys accept her. The numbers man returns a year later and Sophy says she has a gift for him. She takes him to the beach and writes in the sand, “Thank you for the running shoes. Now I can read and write.” She tells him one day she wants to build a school in her town and become a teacher.
Vocabulary: running shoes, government, words, wish
Small group questions:
Who was the numbers man? (a counter for the government)
What was Sophy’s secret wish? (to go to school/become a teacher)
Do you have a wish?
Why did Sophy need the running shoes to complete her wish? (it was too dangerous to go to school without them)
What words did Sophy’s dad write? (her name, name of village)
What words do you know/like to write?
How did Sophy get the boys to accept her? (she raced them/proved she fit in)
Take Away:
Students could write down their “secret” (or not secret) wishes and we could collect them and keep a wish jar OR hang up the wishes so that the kids can be reminded to work hard towards these.

Along with that I also I had to do an introduction slide to let the everyone know who I am. We were told the kids love to look at pictures of your life.  So here's what I did for that (it's a powerpoint but I'll just lay it out):

Kelsie Marshall

I am a student in Utah. I love to dance, I have been doing it since I was three. I have two little brothers and a baby sister. When I’m not in school or at dance I like to see my friends and listen to music.

Well I hope you thought it was interesting and I really really hope the kids like it!

  1. Kelsie this is awesome! Did you come up with this all on your own? I feel inspired :) But I'm kind of sad the pictures didn't work on my computer.

You have a great opportunity and I'm sure you will do wonderful!

PS Thanks for the ADvice, and the smiley face.
